Gestation by Kathryn Gruber

<< Previous Item Next Item >>

“Gestation” is a mixed media abstract painting by Kathryn Gruber that delves into the concept of growth and the process of becoming.

A highly textured piece, Kathryn uses relief, layers of paint, and scratching to reveal the layers below. The vibrant central figure symbolises development and hidden metamorphosis.

Viewers are prompted to contemplate growth and birth as it unfolds in both the natural world, in making our ideas tangible, and within ourselves. “Gestation” invites introspection on the beauty of hidden processes and the power of evolution, recognising that transformation often occurs in the depths of our being before it emerges into the light of day.

Artist: Kathryn Gruber

I am a contemporary abstract artist based in South Australia.

Layering paint and gestural marks to create expressive mixed media abstract paintings rich with drama and metaphor, I use my art practice as a way to process the world and find my place within it,

Painting is a journey of self discovery and introspection. The process is a series of layers, beginning with highly experimental gestural marks using paint, pencil, oil pastels and charcoal in vivid colours, with further layers that refine and balance the piece using value and colour. After adding layers, I scratch back through the layers using pottery tools, screwdrivers, and sandpaper, to retain looseness and uncover the layers and colours beneath. The combination of gestural marks, layers of paint, and scratching gives the work an industrial tactile texture.
